Manx Loaghtan yarn comes from the rare Manx Loaghtan sheep, a primitive breed from the Isle of Man with fewer than 7,000 head globally. Its wool is prized for its natural, undyed chestnut-to-toffee brown color, soft yet durable texture, and slight oiliness that adds sheen and water resistance. The staple length (70–100 mm) makes it great for spinning, knitting, crocheting, or weaving—think cozy sweaters, vests, hats, and scarves. It’s medium-soft, not as plush as merino but not coarse, striking a balance for versatile projects.

Texture and Feel: Soft, crimpy, and lustrous with a close, oily texture that enhances its sheen and durability. It’s a medium wool—balancing softness (comparable to Shetland) with resilience, avoiding excessive scratchiness.

Color: Naturally undyed in warm brown tones like toffee or coppery hues; blends with silks or other fibers can add glow.

The Manx Loaghtan breed has faced near-extinction but persists through dedicated breeding. Primarily raised for meat, its fiber has gained recognition among spinners and knitters. The name “Loaghtan” comes from Manx Gaelic for “mouse-brown,” highlighting its signature color.  Organic sourcing from specific flocks underscores its eco-friendly status.
