Wool of Bergschaf sheep (German for “mountain sheep”). This is a traditional type of hardy mountain sheep primarily raised in the Alps, especially in Austria (often called Tyrolean Bergschaf or Tyrolean mountain sheep wool).
The wool itself is a medium-coarse fiber, typically in the range of 30-36 microns (often listed around 33 microns). It has a nice crimp, good volume, and comes in natural colors like white, gray, brown, and darker shades—sometimes blended for tweedy effects.
It’s strong and robust, making it excellent for items that need to withstand wear, like outerwear, socks, or rugged garments. Spun yarn is often described as spinning into durable singles or plied yarns that “wear like iron.”
Overall, if you’re into natural, rugged wools from European mountain breeds, Bergschaf is a fantastic choice—practical, eco-friendly (often certified or sourced sustainably)
