This fluid crescent shawl in two sizes (Petite/Tall), features an unusual hem treatment inspired by distinct shapes found in nature—tree mushrooms, sea sponges, and woodland nests come to mind. Quirky lines within the motifs are accented with a contrasting color here, but a single color or variegated colorway will offer equal drama. The shawl begins at the hem with easy-to-work lace motifs; the stitch count reduces steadily to a garter stitch body shaped by short rows into a curving shape. Use a soft yarn blend containing some silk for a fabric that drapes luxuriously with liquid edges. To learn more about the original design process of Polypore, read the blog.

Suggested Yarns: 

Kent Lace, Modern Deco Lace, Better Breakfast Fingering, Stone Soup Fingering, Shetlandia Fingering, Jacob Fingering, or any soft, laceweight yarn with 125 to 175 yards per ounce. Substituting yarn and/or needles may result in an overall variation in size, drape, and yardage requirement.  

Finished Size: 

80(100) inches around hem edge and 16(22) inches long at center back

Yarn Requirements: 

500(900) total yards if using a single color
250(450) yards each of Color A (dark) and Color B (light) if using two colors as written

Gauge:
 24 sts and 36 rows = 4 inches in stockinette on larger (hem) needle (unwashed, unblocked)

Needles: 
size 5US (3.75 mm) for hem (or size to obtain correct gauge) 
size 3US (3.25 mm) for edging and body (or .5 mm smaller than body needle)
