Polypay Sheep & Wool
The Polypay sheep is a white, medium-sized, polled breed developed in the 1960s at the U.S. Sheep Experiment Station in Dubois, Idaho. Mature ewes average about 160 lb (72 kg) and are known for their smooth bodies and lack of excessive wrinkles.
The breed is a unique four-breed composite of Targhee, Rambouillet, Dorset, and Finnish Landrace genetics, combining strong maternal traits, prolificacy, and dual-purpose value for both meat and wool production.
A Highly Productive “All-in-One” Sheep
Polypay sheep were specifically developed to improve farm and range productivity, and they stand out for their exceptional reproductive performance:
- Known for high lifetime prolificacy, outperforming many western range breeds
- Lamb survival rates are higher than many comparable breeds
- Ewes can produce two pregnancies per year
- Average of 2.4 lambs per pregnancy
- Lambs grow quickly, with strong weaning weights at 120 days
- Strong maternal instincts and excellent mothering ability
These traits make the Polypay one of the most efficient and productive sheep breeds developed in the United States.
A Breed Built for Better Returns
The Polypay breed began with the vision of Idaho sheep producer Reed Hulet, who wanted a more productive and profitable sheep for both range and farm systems. His goal was to develop a sheep with better fertility, mothering ability, and wool production.
Working with Dr. Clarence Hulet at the U.S. Sheep Experiment Station, a carefully planned breeding program combined genetics from Finn sheep, Rambouillet, Dorset, and Targhee lines. By 1970, the first four-breed composite was created, and the name “Polypay” (meaning “many returns”) was coined in 1975 to reflect its economic value and productivity.
Interest in the breed grew quickly, and by 1980, the American Polypay Sheep Association was formed.
Wool Characteristics
Polypay wool is a coarse to medium-grade fleece with practical, versatile qualities:
- Fiber diameter: 24 to 33 microns
- Staple length: 2.5 to 5 inches (average ~4 inches / 10 cm)
- Raw fleece weight: 6 to 10 lbs
- Clean wool yield: about 57%
The wool is considered suitable for woolen systems and is valued for its functional, workable characteristics.
Breed Highlights
Polypay sheep are known for combining productivity and adaptability:
- Medium-sized, white, polled sheep
- Strong maternal instincts and fertility
- Efficient growth and good carcass quality
- Well-suited for both range and farm systems
- Economically efficient, with production profits reported significantly higher than many other U.S. breeds
The Idea Behind “Polypay”
The name “Polypay” reflects the breed’s purpose:
“Poly” meaning many, and “Pay” meaning return on investment and labor.
It was designed to give producers more value through increased fertility, wool production, and lamb output.
